Our Science

Research & Development

Our research and development programme is dedicated to advancing the functional and therapeutic use of plants. Our research and development facility includes six acres of glasshouse cultivation space and specialist laboratories for tissue culture development, CO₂ extraction, product formulation and analytical testing.

Our team of experienced cultivators is led by Group Technical & Cultivation Director, Andrew Fuller. The focus of their research and development is on breeding programmes that identify plant varieties with high levels of active molecules.

Utilising our state of the art glasshouse our cultivators are able to optimise the growing conditions in order to maximise the yields of selected molecules. Using the latest LED light technology with variable light spectrum we are able to enhance plant growth, and with the use of blackout curtains we are able to manipulate daylength to replicate the natural habitat of different plant species.

Once we have identified active molecules of interest, we utilise the latest breeding techniques to develop plant varieties that we can scale up for high density production in our state-of-the-art glasshouse. At our fully integrated facility we are able to produce active molecules with full seed to sale traceability for nutraceutical, personal care and pharmaceutical application.

Using tissue culture we are building an extensive genetic library of clean, disease and pest-free plant clones, to ensure the consistency, uniformity and reliability of our proprietary genetics.

Our team of experts in the fields of chemistry, plant science and biotechnology are continually striving to identify and develop innovative and sustainable products with active molecules derived from plants.

Our process chemists are able to isolate active molecules using a range of sustainable extraction, fractionation, distillation and enzymatic modification techniques.

Using CO₂ extraction, the team are able to selectively extract active molecules from plants using a clean, natural and solvent-free process. CO₂ is widely considered the best method of extraction because it is the cleanest, safest, and most efficient process that produces higher yields and preserves the natural properties of plants.

Our research and development facility has five extraction rigs, ranging from micro to pilot scale, with a capacity to process a few grams to tens of kilograms. The CO₂ used in our extraction process is contained in a closed loop system and recycled for continuous use.

With analytical capabilities, scientific expertise, and state of the art instrumentation, our laboratory team play a critical role in the identification of active molecules and the assessment of their quality, purity, strength, and stability.

Having an in-house analytical laboratory enables us to fully test, analyse and characterise plant material at all stages of development from fresh biomass material through processing and extraction to finished product formulation and stability testing.

The laboratory is equipped with a wide range of analytical instruments, including High Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Using validated methodology and operating to strict quality systems ensures we are working to the highest standards of analysis in the laboratory.
